February 27, 2026. Two AI companies. One Pentagon contract. Two very different answers.

Anthropic, maker of Claude, said no — refusing to allow their AI for mass surveillance or autonomous lethal weapons. OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT, said yes — signing the deal hours later.

What happened next became the largest consumer revolt against an AI company in history.

The Great Uninstall

By Saturday, February 28, ChatGPT uninstalls surged 295% day-over-day. Over 2.5 million users deleted the app in protest, rallying under the hashtag #QuitGPT.

Claude — Anthropic's rival chatbot — overtook ChatGPT in the US App Store rankings for the first time ever. Daily signups quadrupled. The ethics underdog became the consumer champion overnight.
